Our National City clinic offers a full range of chiropractic services. ABOUT THE DOCTOR
Dr. Joe A. Hernandez completed his undergraduate studies in Exercise Physiology at the University of California, Davis. After graduation, he went on to complete three and a quarter years at Palmer College of Chiropractic where he received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2002. Before graduating Dr. Hernandez worked as an intern among chiropractic’s elite helping treat professional athletes in the San Francisco Bay area. Dr. Hernandez has been certified as a Qualified Medical Examiner for the state of California. He is committed to helping each patient reach his or her maximum health potential using a natural approach that respects the inner wisdom of the human body. The care he provides not only eliminates the bodies aches and pains but also strengthens your immune system. Dr. Hernandez goals are to help people with his extensive knowledge of how the body works, through compassion, dedication, and exceptional service.

Sunil Jeswani, M.D.
Board Certified Neurosurgeon/ Spine Surgeon
Dr. Sunil Jeswani is a board-certified neurosurgeon who recently opened his private practice in Escondido and La Mesa after working as a neurosurgeon and assistant clinical professor of neurosurgery at the University of California, San Diego for the past 10 years. He attended medical school at Wayne State University in Michigan, and went on to complete his neurosurgery residency at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA where he received the Leo G. Rigler Award for Outstanding Resident Achievement. Dr. Jeswani completed his residency at the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine. He has 16 years of neurosurgical and spine surgery experience, and is the Medical Director of the Department of Neurosurgery at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside and Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa.
Dr. Jeswani takes personal injury cases, and has experience as a medical expert – providing IMEs and testifying for both plaintiff and defense attorneys. He also speaks Spanish.

Dr. Rana Ram
Board Certified Emergency Medicine Specialist
Dr. Rana Ram is a board-certified emergency physician. She trained at a Level 1 trauma center in New York City which exposed her to a variety of acute medical conditions. This training allows her to provide quality medical care in assessing the patient to identify the most urgent diagnosis.
After residency, she moved to San Diego and has worked at emergency departments in the area. She had the honor of receiving the Guardian Angel Award which is patient sponsored recognition of the medical care provided by the physician. She has worked in the ER at the VA where she enjoyed providing service to the veterans. Subsequently, she was promoted at her last position to assistant medical director where she actively mentored other clinicians in the group in correctly assessing and managing patients.
Dr. Ram obtained her undergraduate degree in psychology and minor in neuroscience from USC. At USC she took an active role in philanthropy and was awarded the USC Outstanding Community Award. She went on to complete medical school in northern CA where she continued her community involvement and was the recipient of the TOUCH award by the AOA House of Delegates.
Dr. Ram emphasizes providing quality medical care to her community and enjoys the lifelong commitment to staying up to date on the evolving medical advances and helping patients which is the core mission of her practice.

Nathan A. Miller, M.D. is a pioneer in the field of pain medicine with over a decade of experience treating patients in the North County San Diego area. Dr. Nathan Miller is a well-respected, compassionate physician who strives to help his patients regain their lives. He is Chief of Pain Medicine at Scripps Memorial Hospital, Encinitas and is double-board certified in Anesthesiology and Interventional Pain Medicine.
Dr. Miller completed his pain fellowship at the prestigious University of Virginia pain program. He is a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and a Qualified Medical Examiner in the State of California.

Dr. Ankush Bansal is a double board-certified Anesthesiologist and Interventional Pain Physician (through the American Board of Anesthesiology) that has devoted his career to understanding complex and difficult-to-treat painful conditions. He has helped numerous patients with incapacitating pain improve their quality of life and regain function. He is actively involved in ongoing clinical research and multiple national medical societies including American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, American Society of Regional Anesthesia, and North American Neuromodulation Society. He has published articles in peer-reviewed medical journals including the Pain Medicine Journal. He is continually striving to find new and effective ways to treat chronic pain.
Dr. Bansal completed his undergraduate training at the University of Michigan where he studied the impact of exercise, nutrition, and movement on the human body. He completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Michigan Medical School. After enduring a chronic painful neck injury, he moved to Los Angeles to specialize in Anesthesiology and Chronic Interventional Pain Management through the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) where he was mentored by some of the most renown figures in the field of Pain Medicine.
In the summer of 2018, he joined Coastal Pain Medical Group. He is dedicated to their mission of bringing the highest quality and compassionate pain services to their patients. Dr. Yogesh Patel has dedicated his life to the eradication of pain. Dr. Patel practices evidence based medicine and the multi-disciplinary approach to pain management, giving his patients the most options and the best care possible. He has helped many patients with difficult and advanced debilitating pain conditions. Dr. Patel is double board certified in Anesthesiology and Interventional Pain Medicine from the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Patel is admired by his colleagues and adored by his patients. Dr. Patel trained at UCSD, one of the highest rated interventional pain fellowship programs in the country. There he trained with pioneers in the field of Pain Medicine, and developed a strong interest in patient education and prevention. At UCSD, he received outstanding acknowledgement in excellent patient care.
Dr. Patel is the founder of MyPainTools, a chronic pain education and prevention program. He feels that knowledge is empowerment, and that educated patients have the best chance for a pain-free lifestyle. Along with MyPainTools and the Coastal Pain eClub, he is actively developing programs to bring support groups and community education opportunities to North County. Dr. Patel has also worked extensively with other physicians and has placed strong emphasis on developing a strong working relationship with referring physicians with the end result of providing excellent and timely patient care.

Anthony A. Virella, M.D.
Board Certified Neurosurgeon/ Spine Surgeon
Dr. Virella is a Board-Certified, Fellowship trained Neurological Spine Surgeon with advanced training in the management of complex spinal disorders. He attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, (P&S) one of the oldest and most prestigious medical schools in the United States. He is a graduate of the UCLA Neurosurgery Residency Program under the direction of Neil A. Martin, M.D., F.A.C.S. He completed his complex spine in-folding resident fellowship at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation with Dr. Edward C. Benzel, M.D. Additional work included a second fellowship in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at the UCLA Comprehensive Spine Center with Larry T. Khoo, M.D. Dr. Virella is a nationally recognized specialist in the field who has authored numerous articles and lectured nationally and internationally in the field of complex and minimally invasive spine surgery.
Dr. Virella evaluates and treats patients with a variety of spinal and cerebral disorders including: Spinal Tumors, Herniated discs and nerve root impingement of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, Spinal instability resulting from degenerative spinal disease and trauma, including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar fusions. John C. Austin, M.D.
Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon
Dr. John Austin is a fellowship trained, board certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in conservative and surgical treatment of shoulder, knee, and hip conditions.
Dr. Austin earned his medical degree from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and then went on to complete his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Michigan Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He also completed a knee and shoulder arthroscopy fellowship at the Cincinnati SportsMedicine and Orthopaedic Center.
In 2006, Dr. Austin opened his private practice Northwest Orthopedic Surgery in Hillsboro, Oregon, and then worked at the University of New Mexico Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Sandover Regional Medical Center. In 2014, he moved to Springfield, Massachusetts and opened his orthopedic surgery practice there before deciding to settle in San Diego with his family opening his Northwest Orthopedic Surgery practice in La Jolla in 2018.

Mark Schoemann, M.D.

Dr. Mark Schoemann earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine, and then went on to complete his residency in general surgery at University of Rochester in New York and his plastic surgery residency at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He also completed a fellowship in Craniofacial & Pediatric Plastic Surgery from Emory – Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Dr. Schoemann has extensive experience working as a reconstructive surgeon and hand surgeon, and served as Medical Director at the Carilion Clinic Craniofacial Center at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke, Virginia.
In 2016, Dr. Schoemann moved to San Diego and opened his private practice in La Jolla where he split his time between reconstructive surgery/ pediatric surgery and ER Call at Scripps La Jolla, Scripps Encinitas and Scripps Green with his cosmetic surgery center.
Dr. Schoemann has always believed in giving back to the community and underprivileged communities around the globe, and moved to India for a year to take the position of Medical Director and Chief of Plastic Surgery for Operation Smile at the Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre in Assam, India.
