ABOUT THE DOCTOR
Mark Schultzel, M.D., MBA
Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon
Dr. Mark Schultzel is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery. He trained at the prestigious Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic under mentor Dr. John Itamura, and is a respected expert in injuries of the shoulder and elbow. His focuses of practice are shoulder and elbow sports medicine (labral tears, rotator cuff tears, Tommy John injuries), shoulder and elbow arthroplasty (joint reconstruction), and fracture care.
Dr. Schultzel completed undergraduate, medical school, and business school at UC San Diego, with orthopaedic surgery residency training in Kansas City. He has experience with sports medicine coverage at an elite level, as a team physician for the US Olympic Team, San Diego Legion Professional Rugby Team, as well as for the Los Angeles Sparks and Loyola Marymount Athletics. He currently is a team physician for the USA Kendo Team and for the United States Olympic Committee. Dr. Schultzel is the Chair of the Sharp Community Medical Group Orthopaedic Specialty Advisory Council and sits on the Surgical Steering Committee for Sharp Healthcare.
He is also committed to training the next generation of physicians: he provides mentorship to numerous college students, medical students, and residents, fellows, and young attendees. He is a volunteer clinical instructor for the UCSD School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgeon and Adjunct Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery for Touro College of Medicine and Rocky Mountain University. Dr. Schultzel is also a clinical instructor at Point Loma Nazarene University.

Dr. Herschberger specializes in workplace “workmans’ compensation”, automobile injuries, sports, and personal injury. Dr. Herschberger provides rehabilitative exercise; additionally, he believes that educating the patient along with active care will allow the patient to improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle; this is why every patient will receive a specific treatment plan that is optimized to benefit the patient.
Receiving a Doctor of Chiropractic from the Cleveland Chiropractic College and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Abilene Christian University, Dr. Herschberger has practiced for over 25 years. In addition to his experience providing chiropractic care in his private practice, Dr. Herschberger has the unique experience of having been a Chiropractic Rehab Therapist for the Department of Corrections, worked as a Chiropractor for members of the Men’s and Women’s Beach Volley Ball Tour, as a chiropractor for the Winning America 3 Cup Foundation, and as a Chiropractor/ Team Physician for the USA Men’s National Volleyball Team. Dr. Herschberger has worked for multiple sports teams as a N.A.T.A. certified athletic trainer, including the San Diego Chargers in the 1980s. Anthony Pirritano, D.C. is a Doctor of Chiropractic. He graduated valedictorian, he is a clinical excellence award winner, as well as received the President’s Award from Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in 1992.Pirritano was the youngest board member ever assigned to Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. He served on the Chiropractic State Board as a review instructor for California, Utah, and Nevada from 1992 to 1996. He not only Founded Chiropractic Network in 1992, he also subsequently cofounded Integrated Medical Center in 2015.

Mark S. Stern, M.D.
Board Certified Neurosurgeon/ Spine Surgeon
Mark S. Stern, MD, is board certified by the American Board of Neurosurgery. He is an active member of the American Association of Neurosurgeons, California Neurosurgeons Association, San Diego Academy of Neurosurgeons, and American Medical Association. Dr. Stern began his medical training at the Albany Medical College in New York. While in medical school, he was awarded a fellowship in oncology at Leads Infirmary in Leads, England. Upon completing his fellowship, he accepted an internship and residency at Georgetown University, where he was immersed in general surgery. His primary interest however remained spinal disorders, pain management, and pediatric neurosurgery. During this time, he focused on writing a number of research articles on these topics and would eventually be rewarded with a fellowship in neurological surgery from the National Institute of Health (NIH). Upon completion of this second fellowship, Dr. Stern moved to Los Angeles to finish his residency training at the University of Southern California. Here he continued to perfect his microsurgical skills in the areas of vascular tumors, aneurysms, cranial base brain tumors, and all manner of spinal pathology.
Dr. Stern is currently the chief of the division of neurosurgery at Palomar Medical Center. Under his leadership, he has instituted a number of protocols at both hospitals such as Radiosurgery, Stereotactic surgery and minimally invasive neurosurgery and micro neurosurgery. However, one of the most important items brought by Dr. Stern was the introduction of breakthrough technology, such as image-guided procedures, to our North County hospitals. His persistence to use new technology to provide high quality and efficient care has enhanced the success rate of numerous surgeries.

He did his physical medicine and rehabilitation residency training at Beaumont Health System in Michigan. Dr. Thomas Schweller, MD, is triple board certified neurologist in Neurology & Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Electroencephalogram (EEG). He is also a qualified medical evaluator (QME), independent medical examiner (IME) and agreed medical examiner (AME).
Dr. Schweller received his Doctor of Medicine from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and completed is pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and his fellowship in Neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
In 1988, Dr. Schweller began his private practice in San Diego which has consisted of private patients, AME’s, QME’s and independent medical examinations for the Department of Social Services, Social Security in neurology and pediatrics. He also served a clinical teaching appointment in the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Neurology at Mercy Hospital, San Diego. Dr. Schweller has privileges at Scripps Mercy Hospital.
