Dr. Joshua Pal graduated Cum Laude and subsequently attended medical school with training at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. After recovering from spine surgery, he went on to complete his internship in Riverside. In 2008, Dr. Pal completed the requirements for licensure in medical acupuncture at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Pal subsequently completed his residency in anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School and attended fellowship training at Stanford University. He has been on the Medical Staff at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) since 2012 as an Affiliate and Attending. He is a Diplomate with double board-certification in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, with a focus on image-guided minimally invasive procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of pain.

Since entering practice more than 10 years ago, Dr. Pal has served as a Medical Director for outpatient ambulatory surgery centers and consulted in the development of pain therapeutics. He has given multiple scientific presentations on spinal cord stimulation, Stem Cell therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, and other Regenerative Medicine techniques, and was recently invited to present to the County of San Diego on these topics. Dr. Pal has won awards for his research in neurology and pain medicine, has published in scientific journals on non-opiate treatments of pain, and authored a textbook chapter on the advanced treatment of headaches.

Dr. Pal has extensive personal and professional interests in the minimally invasive treatment of sports injuries, as he pursues a variety of recreational athletics in his free time. He also volunteers as a ringside doctor for youth boxing in the South Bay, as well as providing pediatric anesthesia for surgical missions in developing countries, most recently with Smiles of Tecate.

Dr. Newsome received his undergraduate degree at Columbia University in New York, and graduated with honors from Indiana University School of Medicine. After completing his anesthesiology residency and fellowship at Emory University he remained on the faculty for three years as an assistant professor of anesthesiology before moving his practice to San Diego.

NATHAN A. MILLER, M.D.

Nathan A. Miller, M.D. is a pioneer in the field of pain medicine with over a decade of experience treating patients in the North County San Diego area. Dr. Nathan Miller is a well-respected, compassionate physician who strives to help his patients regain their lives. He is Chief of Pain Medicine at Scripps Memorial Hospital, Encinitas and is double-board certified in Anesthesiology and Interventional Pain Medicine.
Dr. Miller completed his pain fellowship at the prestigious University of Virginia pain program. He is a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and a Qualified Medical Examiner in the State of California.
Dr. Miller is at the forefront in the treatment and management of a wide variety of acute and chronic pain disorders. He is a strong proponent of a multi-disciplinary approach in pain management to improve outcome and increase quality of life. With his knowledge and the use of advanced medicine, he has been able to help many patients who had little hope of a functional life. Dr. Miller specializes in difficult cases where other pain doctors have given up. He continues to stay current in the field of pain management and studies peer-review medical journals and literature. ANKUSH K. BANSAL, M.D.

Dr. Ankush Bansal is a double board-certified Anesthesiologist and Interventional Pain Physician (through the American Board of Anesthesiology) that has devoted his career to understanding complex and difficult-to-treat painful conditions. He has helped numerous patients with incapacitating pain improve their quality of life and regain function. He is actively involved in ongoing clinical research and multiple national medical societies including American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, American Society of Regional Anesthesia, and North American Neuromodulation Society. He has published articles in peer-reviewed medical journals including the Pain Medicine Journal.  He is continually striving to find new and effective ways to treat chronic pain.

Dr. Bansal completed his undergraduate training at the University of Michigan where he studied the impact of exercise, nutrition, and movement on the human body. He completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Michigan Medical School.  After enduring a chronic painful neck injury, he moved to Los Angeles to specialize in Anesthesiology and Chronic Interventional Pain Management through the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) where he was mentored by some of the most renown figures in the field of Pain Medicine.

In the summer of 2018, he joined Coastal Pain Medical Group.  He is dedicated to their mission of bringing the highest quality and compassionate pain services to their patients.  He currently has medical and surgical privileges at Scripps Memorial Encinitas Hospital and Tri-City Medical Center. Amirhassan Bahreman, M.D.
Dr. Amirhassan Bahreman is a board certified neurologist. He earned his doctor in Medicine from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in Mashhad, Iran in 1993. He then moved to the United States, and went on to complete a residency in internal medicine from Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, and a residency in Neurology at Albert Einstein School of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. Dr. Bahreman went on to obtain a fellowship in neuromuscular disorders/ neurophysiology at University of Chicago Hospitals in Chicago, IL and is board certified in general neurology, vascular neurology and neuromuscular disorders.

Dr. Bahreman performs a wide variety of neurophysiological testing including: EMG/nerve conduction studies, routine EEG, 24-hour EEG monitoring, vestibular and balance testing. By performing these studies, he has been able to assist surgeons and pain management specialists for designing accurate and successful care plans. Dr. Bahreman has been practicing neurology in San Diego for nine years, and has been instrumental along with his partners in directing the stroke program at Sharp Grossmont Hospital which is the largest stroke center in San Diego county. He has treated thousands of ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage patients in acute settings. His outpatient practice focus is neuropathy and pain related to degenerative and traumatic spine disorders. Mr. Alavi graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, one of the largest Acupuncture Medical Colleges in the United States. While there, Matt trained under many of the finest health practitioners in his field, gaining a deeper understanding and knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In adjunct to his studies at Pacific College, Matt continued his education and clinical expertise at Chengdu Traditional Medical Hospital in Chengdu, China.

Mr. Alavi has obtained specialized training in orthopedics, neurology, endocrinology, immune disorders, gastrointestinal dysfunction and pain diseases. He has successfully treated numerous sports related injuries of collegiate athletes and coaches, at the RIMAC center at the University of California San Diego. Here, Matt utilized his background in sports medicine and nutrition to provide sports enhancement therapy.

Renowned for integrating the ancient system of medicine with current medical practices she had the opportunity to work at hospitals and clinics throughout the county to deepen her knowledge and practical application.

Her passion for helping others combined with her desire to obtain the most current research and treatment methods, provides her patients with the highest level of care. She believes in empowering others to play a role in their healing process by providing them with an increased understanding and awareness of causative factors. Brett Rabin is a California Licensed Acupuncturist specializing in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and the mitigation of pain associated with acute and chronic injuries. He has been the Acupuncturist for the San Diego Padres since the 2015 season and currently treats professional baseball players on the active rosters of MLB. He utilizes Sports Medicine Acupuncture alongside MLB Athletic Trainers, Training Staff, Team Doctors, Sports Physical Therapists, and Chiropractors in the on-going evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of professional baseball players on the San Diego Padres active roster.

In his private practice, Brett remains committed to providing the utmost in quality patient care. He firmly believes in fostering open communication with each and every one of his patients. Dr. Kim graduated the top of his class at the Chicago School of Medicine, and graduated from the UCLA School of Medicine Anesthesiology Program and Pain Management Fellowship. He is board certified in Anesthesiology with subspecialty certification in Pain Management.

He served as Clinical Instructor at the UCLA School of Medicine and as an attending physician at the California Pain Medicine Center at UCLA, specializing in research and treatment of RSD and non-surgical as well as minimally invasive surgical treatment of the spine. He has been specializing in Spinal implants and Minimally Invasive Laser Endoscopic Discectomy and served as guest lecturer for Medtronics and Boston Scientific neuromodulation system, and as instructor for Clarus Laser Disc Endoscopy.

Dr. Kim also works closely with physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and pain psychologists to provide comprehensive pain management care in addition to interventional pain treatments to diagnose and manage difficult chronic pain conditions. He performs a wide array of interventional procedures, including epidural injections, selective nerve root blocks, SI and facet joint injections, RF neuro-ablations, laser discectomy, trigger point injections, lysis of adhesions, peripheral and Spinal Cord stimulator implantations.

Dr. Kumar is a board-certified and fellowship trained pain management consultant. He is an active staff physician at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, and local surgical centers.

He has an extensive educational background and the most up-to-date medical training in pain management. His interest in pain medicine stems from his research background in chronic pain and spinal physiology, and he utilizes this knowledge in his private practice. He is published in medical journals, is active in numerous medical societies, has lectured extensively on epidural analgesia and opioid pharmacology, and remains involved in medical student education.

Dr. Kumar is a long time local resident of San Diego, growing up and living most of his life in North County. He enjoys spending time with his wife and 5 year-old twins, Max and Chloe, his friends, and his dogs. He feels privileged to live in, and care for the patients of North County, San Diego.
